Registration for New ListServ List
Thank you for your interest in creating a list on the Shamash network. Shamash is a volunteer coordinated effort which provides resources to the Jewish community. We have no funding. We have no administrative staff to send bills. We do ask that you support Shamash by paying $50 per list per year so we can continue to pay the fees we have to support the hosting of this machine, its hardware and software. Without your payments, our costs would spiral and make this project impossible to maintain.

Our mailing address is:
Shamash: The Jewish Network
c/o Hebrew College Online
160 Herrick Road
Newton Centre, MA 02459

You can make your checks out to Hebrew College, which is a non-profit organization and the administrative home of Shamash. Please put "Shamash" and the "name of your list" into the "comment/memo" section of the check so we can know who sent the funds.

Below you will find a form which asks you many questions about your new list. It is very important that each blank is filled in completely. If you forget to fill out one blank, you will be prompted to do so before this information is mailed. Many of the blanks have a default answer filled in for you. If you would like different options, please feel free to make changes, these are just our standard choices.

Even if you may have included some of this information in previous contact with us, we would appreciate you taking the time to fill out this form completely.

Before we begin, what is your email address?
Your Name:

Organizational Affiliation

  1. Name of affiliated organization:
  2. Organization's address (street,city,state,zip):
  3. Organization's phone (xxx-xxx-xxxx):

List Owner

The list owner is the person or persons who will take overall responsibility for running the list. In order to be a list owner, you must have a working e-mail address so you can manage the list, and so the Shamash staff may contact you if there is a problem with your list.
  1. Full name of the list owners(s) ( firstname lastname): [multiple names should be separated by commas]

  2. Example: Daniel Goldfarb, Sarah Rosenblatt
  3. E-mail address(es) of the list owner(s): [multiple e-mail addresses should be separated by commas]

  4. Example: daniel@machine.org, sarah@computer.org
  5. List Owner's Address (street,city,state,zip):
  6. List Owner's phone (xxx-xxx-xxxx):

The New List

  1. The list name will be the first part of the email address of your list. For example, there is a list called "A Byte of Torah". The list name is bytetorah, and the full email address is bytetorah@shamash.org. It is preferable to have a short, easy to type address. We recommended keeping the list name between 4 and 15 characters, and it must be all lower case, with no periods and no spaces. Choose the list name carefully, to reflect the intended purpose and scope of the list. For example, it is better to call your list "tipa", if your list is for Temple Israel of PA, than to simply call it "israel". For general news about israel, you might call your list "israel-news". If the requested list name is already in use or is otherwise reserved, the Shamash Staff may choose an alternate name.

  2. List Name:
  3. The comment is a one line description of list. This one line will be appended to all mail sent out by your list and will be used as the description when anyone requests a list of our lists. For example you may want your comment to be something like: "Temple Israel of PA Weekly Email" or "Latest News from Israel". The comment must be no more than 44 characters, and should not include quotation marks.

  4. Comment:

List Configuration Options

Please note that almost all of these options can be changed at a later time, by you as the list owner. Right now we are going to set the initial list options.

  1. Should subscriptions to the list be open or be approved by the owner? With open-subscriptions, anyone can join simply by sending an email message to the ListServ. Yet, with owner-subscriptions, all requests to join the list will be forwarded to the listowner who then must add the person to the list

  2. Open-subscriptions
    Owner-subscriptions

  3. Do you want messages from your list to be sent out individually or as a digest? Almost all lists have this option set to send out individual messages. Subscribers can choose to receive digests instead of individual messages, if they choose. If you set this option to default to digest, then you will have to tell ListServ once you become a list owner when you want the digest distributed. (i.e. What month, day of week, time of day? or How many lines or bytes in the digest?)

  4. Send out individual messages
Send out collections of messages in digests

  5. Should the list be moderated or unmoderated?

  6. For an unmoderated list, messages are sent directly to the list by subscribers. For a moderated list, messages are sent to a moderator to approve or reject before being sent to the list. (Please note that moderation makes running a list much more work, yet it gives you better control over a list also. If you are in doubt about what to do, make the list unmoderated now, and you can change it later if you'd like.)
    Unmoderated
    Moderated

  7. Optional: If moderated, the person who does the moderation may be the list owner or another person who is a designated moderator. If there will be a moderator who is different than the list owner, please provide the E-mail address of the moderator (multiple e-mail addresses may be separated by commas).

  8. Moderator (optional):

  9. Should the list be confidential or visible? When looking at a listing of all the lists Shamash supports, do you want your list in the listing? Shamash in most cases discourages confidential lists, as its good for your organization because people will know you have a list (even if it is a private one).

  10. Visible -- your list will be listed
Confidential -- your list will NOT be listed

Archives

Most of our lists are archived so that users can view the archives from http://listserv.shamash.org/archives/.
  1. Do you want the list to be archived? There are very few reasons you would not archive a list. The archives can be protected, so only list members may view them, therefore it is almost always a good idea to have lists archived.

  2. Yes, please archive my lists.
No, I have very special reasons why I don't want my list archived.

  3. ListServ archives can be publicly available via our web page. Do you want your list's archives visable to the public or only available to your list members?
(If you picked Confidential above, then you should answer Private to this question.)

  4. Public: I want my archives to be available to anyone.
Private: I want only people on my mailing list to be able to see the archives.
    My list is not archived.

  5. Will your new list be carrying D'vrei Torah (explainations of the weekly Torah portion)? Shamash has a special archives of all D'vrei Torah originating from Shamash-based-lists which we make available to our users in a searchable web form.

  6. This list will carry primarily D'vrei Torah.

List Information file

Please write a few sentences describing your list. This will be placed as an info file so that anyone requesting information about your list will receive this file. We must know what your list is used for in order to create it, so please briefly describe your list. Below is a paragraph that you may edit or remove but if you do nothing then this will be part of your info file. We would appreciate it if you would keep this information as part of your list's info file, perhaps as the last paragraph, but you do not have to.

Enter today's Year (4 digits):
We respond as quickly as possible to these requests. If you do not receive a response within three days, please assume we have not received your mail. Please send a follow-up message asking if we have received your message to: accounts@shamash.org
