The following appears in a half page advertisement in the Chicago
Tribune on Monday November 19th 1995.  As stated in the text, it was
signed by the entire Rabbinate of Chicago, without an exception. I was
happy to participate in the effort needed to acquire this
participation.  I am pained that all this was necessary.


A MESSAGE FROM THE ORTHODOX RABBINATE OF GREATER CHICAGO
We, together with Jews world over, are shocked and appalled by the
assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and unequivocally denounce
this terrible act of violence.  Due to misrepresentations and
misunderstandings of the Orthodox Jewish position that have been publicized
in the media, we feel it necessary to issue the following statements of
clarification.
1. THERE IS NO MORAL OR LEGAL JUSTIFICATION WHATSOEVER IN JEWISH LAW FOR THE
OUTRAGEOUS AND HEINOUS CRIME COMMITTED IN THE ASSASSINATION OF PRIME
MINISTER YITZHAK RABIN.
2. ORTHODOX JUDAISM CONDEMNS THE ASSASSIN AS A MURDERER, THE BASEST FORM OF
CRIMINAL.
3. ORTHODOX JUDAISM CONDEMNS ANY INDIVIDUAL THAT ENCOURAGES, SUPPORTS, OR
CONDONES SUCH DESPICABLE AND HORRENDOUS ACTS.  WE PROCLAIM THAT INDIVIDUALS
WHO ESPOUSE SUCH VIEWS ARE EXPRESSING AN EXTREMIST POSITION BASED ON
DISTORTED NATIONALISM.  SUCH VIEWS HAVE NO CONNECTION TO ORTHODOX JUDAISM
AND ARE, INDEED, ANTITHETICAL TO OUR HOLY TORAH, UPON WHICH JUDAISM IS BASED.
4. FINALLY, REGARDLESS OF ONE'S  OPINION CONCERNING THE PEACE PROCESS OR ANY
OTHER ACTION OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL, VIOLENCE OF ANY SORT,
EVEN VERBAL INVECTIVE, IS NOT THE JEWISH WAY OF RESOLVING DIFFERENCES AND
CAN NEVER BE CONDONED.
We hope and pray that in the aftermath of this tragedy we will all come to a
realization of the horrors created by extremism and the need to utterly
reject it, and that a spirit of peace and friendship shall prevail among all
Jews and among all mankind.
